Born in Chicago and raised in Elmhurst, Tom Makinney has spent most of his life living, working, and giving back to the community he calls home. For more than 25 years, Tom has guided buyers and sellers across Elmhurst and the greater Chicagoland area with a blend of strategy, empathy, and precision. A lifelong Elmhurst resident, he combines deep local knowledge with the resources of Compass to deliver data-driven marketing, expert negotiation, and exceptional client care.

As founder of The Makinney Group at Compass, Tom and his team have closed hundreds of transactions totaling more than $500 million in sales volume, earning recognition among the region’s top producers and Real Trends Verified honorees. Known for his integrity and results, Tom represents a diverse range of properties from single-family homes, townhomes, and condos to new construction, tear-downs, renovations, and multi-family investments with the same high level of focus and commitment.

Tom believes real estate is personal. Every move has a story and his role is to help clients write theirs with clarity and confidence. A proud father of three, he raised his children in Elmhurst and remains deeply invested in its schools, neighborhoods, and local traditions. Tom serves as an Elmhurst Historic Preservation Commissioner and former Foundation 205 Board Member, reflecting his dedication to community and stewardship.

Outside of real estate, Tom is a committed endurance athlete: a triathlon competitor, Murph Challenge finisher, and stair-climb participant at both the Willis Tower (SkyRise Chicago) and John Hancock (Hustle Chicago). His approach to training mirrors his approach to business: discipline, perseverance, and an unwavering drive to reach the top.
